The MCU is all set for winter! We’ve got straw bales piled up to keep the unit cozy from those harsh North and West winds that hit Nebraska. Plus, we’ve hooked up some heat to our 250-gallon water tank, along with a circulation pump that kicks in when the temp dips below 35 degrees. This warm water flow keeps the pipes and water nipples/cups from freezing up.

We are excited to share that we’ve upgraded the MCU flooring using sturdy old heavy-duty stainless steel oven racks! This modification allows the roosting birds’ droppings to conveniently fall to the ground while also providing our chickens protection from predators. In the spring, once we move the MCU with the chickens to fresh pasture, we’ll joyfully scoop up the manure and place it in a composting bin, where it will continue the wonderful process of breaking down into nutrient-rich compost!
